When Should I spay/ neuter my Maine Coon kitten?

This is a mix controversial about when Maine Coons should be fixed.  From my experience this is when I suggest to get it done.  Most vets will not do it till age 4-6 months old anyways.  

Females: The earlier the better.  Females are prone to Pyometra.  It's an infection in the uterus and it can be deadly if you do not catch it in time.  Even after surgery, it does not mean they will make it through.  I've rushed many females for this surgery and I tell you, you do not want to go through this.  Females usually do not go into their first heat till closer to age one but I've had one female start at 4 months old.  Do not wait to have your females spayed.

Males: Our first male started spraying days before 9 months old.  So I would say have it scheduled by 8 months old.  I know some breeders say wait till age one.  Honestly I've not seen a difference in male size by waiting a few months longer.  If they start spraying it can be very hard to get them to stop. Best to stop the habit before it happens.  Spraying can also hereditary so it's best not to wait and see.  The smell is horrible and hard to get out.  If the Father does it, the kittens will as well.  The longer you wait in males to fix them and they hit puberty and you are not a breeder, this can cause aggression.  For breeders, if you do not have enough females for your male, it can happen.
