Fun Kitten Fact!
Did you know newborn kittens hiss?
It looks dramatic, but it’s completely normal!

New babies hiss for the first couple of weeks because it’s their natural instinct to protect themselves before their eyes and ears fully develop. They can’t see or hear much yet, so a tiny hiss is their way of saying, “I’m small but mighty!”

Don’t worry — they grow out of it quickly and turn right back into sweet little purr machines.
Newborn sass is real, and it’s adorable.

I'm always on the look out for items that will fit a large Maine Coon. With having lots around here, I'm always having to replace cat trees. I've actually looked for quite some time for something easier to clean. This popped up on Amazon and I wasn't even looking! I was so excited to try this out.
It reminds me of a kids playhouse you would put outside. Now I can scrub and spray cat trees down. My males spray and this will come in handy!
It was very easy to put together and doesn't wobble. This would be great out on a catio as well since it's weather proof.
I will add cat beds that are washable as well.

Tortie/Torbie Cats

You'll find most tortie/torbie cats are female. That's because the same chromosomes that determine their sex also determine the colors in their coats. The female sex chromosome (X) also carries the genetic code for orange or black coat colors; the male sex chromosome (Y) does not carry information on coat color.

Because females have two X chromosomes, they have two sets of genetic information that can determine their coat color. The embryo shuts off one X chromosome in each cell, resulting in orange and black color variations in their coats.

Because a male cat has one X chromosome and one Y chromosome, he'll only be orange or black—not both.

In very rare cases—about 1 in 3,000—a male tortie cat can be born with two X chromosomes and one Y chromosome. In 2014, a Scottish cat rescue welcomed tortie kitten Harry into the fold—a feat so rare it made the news.

Unfortunately, male cats with XXY Syndrome are sterile and often have serious health issues, resulting in significantly shorter lifespan.

What to Expect on Gotcha Day (Pick-Up Day) for Your Kitten

Pick-up day is one of the most exciting moments for new kitten owners—and for us as breeders too! It’s the culmination of weeks (sometimes months) of waiting, preparation, and anticipation. Whether this is your first kitten or one of many, here's a clear guide on what to expect when the big day arrives.

Meet and Greet

Even though you've likely seen photos or videos of your kitten, meeting them in person is always special. We will be waiting in the Maine Coon Manor office upon your arrival. After introduction, you're welcome to tour the males cattery/catio and meet your kitten's parents.

Pregnant moms and kittens are not in the cattery area. They have their own space in the nursery room.

If you’re bringing young children or other family members, we encourage a calm and quiet introduction to avoid overwhelming the kitten.

I will have all your kitten's paperwork, food, toys, bag ready to go. They will come with a carrier as well.

First Moments and the Ride Home

Your kitten might be a little nervous or sleepy on the way home. Some kittens meow during travel, while others settle in quietly. Keep the carrier secure, avoid loud music, and don’t open the carrier until you’re safely inside your car or home.

Settling In at Home

Once you’re home, introduce your kitten to one small, kitten-proofed room first. Give them time to explore and adjust.

Provide:

Litter box
Fresh water
The same food we’ve been feeding (we’ll send a sample home with you)
A cozy bed and some toys

Expect a few days of adjustment as your kitten gets used to their new surroundings.

Final Tips:

Keep the first vet visit scheduled within 3–5 days of pick-up.

Stick to the same food and litter for the first couple of weeks before gradually transitioning.

If you’ve ever sprinkled a little catnip on a toy and watched your cat transform into a rolling, purring, drooling ball of joy—you’re not alone! Catnip is one of those mysterious little wonders in the feline world that seems to flip a switch in some cats, sending them into euphoric bliss. But what exactly is catnip, and why do so many cats love it?

What Is Catnip?
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a member of the mint family. It's a perennial herb that grows in many parts of the world and is perfectly safe for cats. The magic comes from a compound in the plant called nepetalactone, found mostly in the leaves and stems. When cats smell nepetalactone, it binds to receptors in their noses and triggers a response in the brain—similar to the reaction to feline pheromones.

Not All Cats Respond

Kitten basics when bringing home your new fur baby!

We know how exciting bringing home a new companion is, and we also know that you might have questions or need support along the way. For basic pet care tips, please read below.

The Basics

Food

Kitten (under 18 months old)

Purina Pro Plan kitten hard food: Salmon & Rice

I free feed our kittens hard food. They need the extra calories as they grow a ton the first year. They slow down around age one but continue to grow until age 4 to 5 years old. This way they are getting the extra calories they need during those big growth spurts.

Purina Pro Plan kitten wet food: Variety Pack

I give wet food once a day.
If you plan to contiue wet food, I would start out with a forth of a can and go from there.
Every once in a while, I will have a kitten who does not like wet food. I will let you know if that is the case.

Adult (18 months old and older)

Purina Pro Plan adult hard food: Sensitive skin & stomach

I free feed our adults hard food. They need the extra calories as they continue to grow until age 4 to 5 years old. This way they are getting the extra calories they need during those big growth spurts.
Sensitive Skin & Stomach helps with hairballs and coat.

Purina Pro Plan adult wet food

Each adults get one 3oz can of wet food a day.
They do get variety.
If you get a retired cat from me, I will let you know if they like wet food or not. Most of my cats love it.

Treats

I feed this to all the cats.
They love Royal Canin Maine Coon kitten.
Freeze dried minnows. I've tried different freeze dried but minnows are their favorite. Freeze dried can be fed to both cats and dogs.

*If you wish to change the brand of food, we recommend that you purchase another nutritious cat food and introduce it gradually by mixing the current food in with the new food.
