The Curious Case of Catnip: Why Cats Go Crazy for It

Picture
If you’ve ever sprinkled a little catnip on a toy and watched your cat transform into a rolling, purring, drooling ball of joy—you’re not alone! Catnip is one of those mysterious little wonders in the feline world that seems to flip a switch in some cats, sending them into euphoric bliss. But what exactly is catnip, and why do so many cats love it?

What Is Catnip?
Catnip (Nepeta cataria) is a member of the mint family. It's a perennial herb that grows in many parts of the world and is perfectly safe for cats. The magic comes from a compound in the plant called nepetalactone, found mostly in the leaves and stems. When cats smell nepetalactone, it binds to receptors in their noses and triggers a response in the brain—similar to the reaction to feline pheromones.

Not All Cats Respond
Interestingly, not all cats are affected by catnip. Sensitivity is hereditary—about 50-70% of cats have a reaction. Kittens under three months of age usually don’t respond to catnip at all, even if they have the gene for it. So, if your feline friend doesn’t react, don’t worry—they’re still perfectly normal.

What Does It Do to Cats?
  • Cats experiencing catnip can exhibit all kinds of entertaining behaviors. You might see:
  • Rolling and rubbing
  • Meowing or chirping
  • Zoomies or sudden bursts of energy
  • Drooling or licking
  • Zoned-out relaxation
These effects usually last around 10–15 minutes. After that, your cat will typically lose interest and may not respond again for an hour or two.

Is It Safe?
Absolutely! Catnip is non-addictive and safe for cats to sniff or eat. However, too much can lead to an upset tummy, so moderation is key. A small sprinkle a few times a week is more than enough to keep things fun.

Fun Ways to Use Catnip

Here are some creative ways to enrich your cat’s life with catnip:
  • Toys: Refillables, kickers, or even just a sock with dried catnip inside.
  • Scratching posts: Sprinkle catnip on scratchers to encourage use.
  • Training tool: Use it to lure your cat into a carrier or new bed.
  • Catnip spray: Great for those who don’t want the mess of loose flakes.

Alternatives to Catnip
If your cat doesn't react to catnip, try these alternatives:
  • Silvervine
  • Valerian root
  • Tatarian honeysuckle
These often work for cats that are immune to catnip and offer similar playful or calming effects.
---
In Conclusion:
Catnip is one of nature’s delightful little gifts to our feline friends. Whether it sparks a wild zoom-fest or just a mellow cuddle session, it’s a great way to enrich your cat’s environment and bond with them in a fun, harmless way.

Does your cat go wild for catnip or prefer to sit it out? Let me know in the comments!

Stainless Steel Water Bowl Review

8/5/2024

3L/101oz Large Capacity Pet Water Bowl Stainless Steel
No Spill Water Feeder Dispenser

Our Maine Coons love digging in water, which makes the water gross and spill everywhere.  We do have water fountains as well, but no matter how big the fountain is, it stops before the water is even gone.  I'm always filling them back up when water is still in it.  This bowl has helped with spills and less digging. I'm able to refill these bowls less often.  I highly recommend these bowls!
  • Upgraded Stainless Steel: Our self-adjusting float is also made of stainless steel, dishwasher safe and BPA-free, our stainless steel design offers the elevated and modern look you want with additional benefits. 304/18-8 Food-grade material makes the water more secure and safe for pets to drink.
  • Extra Large Capacity: The heavy duty dog water bowl measures 8.8*8.8*3.85 inches, 3 liters. Worry less about your furry friend running out of water. suit for large dogs or multi-pets to use. It also makes a great vehicle carried travel water bowl for dogs.
  • Spill Proof &Slow Drinking: We all know that fast drinking is not good for your dogs. Utilizes the buoyant force of water to realize the function of automatically adjusting the floating plate to slow down the speed of pet drinking. It also reduces water pollution and effectively prevents water spills on the floor.
  • Bottom silicone design: There are four non-slip silicone pads at the bottom of the dog water basin. The silicone pads can increase the friction with the ground, ensure the stability of the dog water basin, and protect the floor.
  • Using Tips: Press the floating disk to make the water overflow from the water outlet and show your pet know this process. Put a little snack on the floating disk to attract pets to find water. We recommend cleaning the bowl and floating disk at least twice a week.

Meet Spider The Tuxedo Cat!

Spider the Tuxedo Maine Coon Cat!

Meet Spider the black and white Maine Coon.  He is a year old and his parents are Jane and Roman.  He looks like he is wearing a tuxedo!

Tuxedo cats get their name from being mostly black with a white chest, as if they were wearing a little tuxedo. While this pattern is often associated with black and white cats, it can also apply to blue and white white. There are also red colored tuxedos and reverse tuxedos who are white on top and black on the bottom.

This is a color pattern and not breed-specific.  Tuxedos are called bicolor.  Bicolors can also have different patterns as well.  It's the white on them that gives the name.

Other Bicolor patterns are harlequin which are random patches of black and white.  Van-patterned will be mostly white with the top of their head and tail being another color.

The gene for tuxedo cats' distinctive white spotting is dominant, so it only takes one parent with this gene to pass it on.

This does mean however that two cats with no white spotting will never have tuxedo kittens.
If the gene is present in a cat, it shows in its appearance.
